What Is Odd Object Training? Part 1

Odd object lifting is made up of lifting objects that are unusual in size shape and weight. It is becoming more and more popular for many reasons. For one, lifting unstable loads (such as a sandbag or keg of water) will strengthen stabilizers in your body that ordinary weights cannot hit.

When you isolate a specific muscle you do not gain the same functional muscle that comes from working a complete muscle group, or better yet, performing a full body exercise (with or with out weights) which will strengthen all your muscles at once. This will result in a stronger, leaner body than if you had only done isolation exercises.
Odd objects are great for complete body workouts that strengthen, condition and burn fat.

Because you are using so many muscles at once, you burn fat faster than a single muscle isolation exercise, too. This means a you get a better workout that can be completed faster.

Benefits of Exercising with Sandbags

Benefits of Exercising with Sandbags:

  • Equipment is low cost. With a typical flex type trainer running $800 and more, sandbags offer a great workout (often better than workouts with traditional gym equipment. With introductory sandbags starting at $100, are cheap in comparison. If you factor in the size and ease of storage, sandbags are the way to go!
  • Sandbags Are Small, Compact, and Easy to Store. They don’t take up a whole room with one piece of equipment.
  • You can build 6 pack abs in a matter of months, sometimes weeks, if you do the right exercises. The fact that many sandbag routines work your abs at the same time as the rest of your body is a great feature.
  • Sandbags increase your overall balance. What sports benefit from balance? Some examples are bicycling, skateboarding, snowboarding wake boarding, surfing, skiing, tennis, hiking, climbing, you name it! If it requires balance and muscle control Sandbags will benefit your sport.
  • You don’t work any muscle in isolation; rather, the whole body is worked at once. This is a key part of Sandbag Fitness. You will see results in the tone of your whole body, rather than in just one area. This is an important aspect of the program since it keeps your tone under control and avoids the problems of a muscle bound physique. This makes for a better, more efficient workout with quicker results.
  • In today’s busy world we need to fit our workouts into tight schedules and small places in order to continue with life as usual. Sandbags are the answer to this problem, in that they do not require long workouts. Instead you get more exercise crammed into a smaller amount of time, not to mention they can fit in almost any corner of the house, and are easily stored between workouts.

What Is Odd Object Training? Part 2

So, what options are there when beginning odd object lifting? Well, you’re in luck, because there are multiple ways to integrate odd object lifting into your workout. I prefer sandbags over most other methods, mainly because of the price and the ability to store them easily.

However, many objects you can incorporate work different areas in different ways, so keep in mind you goals when choosing what equipment to get. Here are a few options:

Sandbag Lifting
Tire Flipping
Atlas Stone Lifting
Sled Dragging
SledgeHammer Swings

These are just a few exercises you can try that have a strength carryover into real life.
